TAKE A GUESS SUNDAYS -- Guess What I Scanned This With??

This isn’t all that great of a shot, but back when I started my blog almost eleven months ago, I wanted to post this photo, but I couldn’t. My cheap little hp officejet 5510v all-in-one copy/scanner/faxer/printer
couldn’t handle the scan. Too much contrast, and that awful white line that goes through all of my dark images would show up in two spots. Well no more!!

Thursday late afternoon I was minding my own business, drumming away happily when the UPS man showed up. The kids were all excited. I looked out the window of my drumming/photography/scapbooking room and saw a huge box from B&H and a little box that I knew was my sons’ Veggie Tale DVD I’d ordered. A B&H box, I panicked!! I hadn’t ordered anything, what did they send me and could I get a RMA code to send it back? It was a heavy box, too. I brought it in and opened it up. There inside was a Christmas wish from my dad and a brand spanking new Epson Perfection 4990 Photo scanner. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined owning this scanner. For a very rare moment in my life, I was speechless. I had been tricked by my dad’s wife. She had asked me a week earlier which scanner she should buy for my dad so he could scan all of his old negatives and slides. I’ll admit the thought of my dad sitting down to do all of that scanning confused me, but whatever. It went right over my head. Turns out the scanner was for me. :o) It sure is nice to be 39 and still get a little spoiled by your dad. He’s the one that got me started on all this photography stuff, it’s in the blood. He’s been shooting since he was a wee little thing. He’s since gone digital, and much of my equipment was lovingly passed down over the past couple of years.

No, the digital photography wasn’t passed down in the genes. I still have no desire to go digital and will never do so. And even though I have this most awesome scanner with Photoshop Elements 2.0 and SilverFast, I will still stay true to my no post-processing values. I will use the dust and scratch removal only. What I post will look exactly like the print I place down on that beautiful scanner’s glass. My children, however, are already having a great time with the post processing features, playing with them on my scanned photos as well as their own artwork.

Thanks, Dad! I love you.

Merry Christmas to all, enjoy your holiday!

Yay! I know you've been frustrated by the limitations of your old scanner for quite a while. Have fun with the new one and we look forward to seeing the results.

That rules! Best gift ever! I can't wait to see what the new pics are going to look like! That is one WICKED scanner, and it's #1 on my list of which scanner I would get for myself!!

...but.. Why so negative about the digitals? They aren't that bad ;)

Congratulations on the scanner, are you going to help him scan some old negs now? :)

That’s a killer scanner, Micki, but, if you ever start to miss that dear ol’ white line, I can run a quick tutorial in Elements 2.0 . . lol . .
