Let’s make Thursdays Critter Day! So, here’s a baby snake I shot. I used my 105mm mac lens instead of the 50mm so I could keep a little more distance between us. For a baby, he was quite ready to attack. I tell you, he wanted me for his dinner!! I got about five shots of him, you can see his tongue coming out of his mouth in this one, but most of it is lost in the slower speed of the shot. This side of the house was shaded and I was hand holding (something I’m not too good at), so I left the aperture opened up wide to get these.
My lab scanned this for me, but even though my scans at home aren’t nearly the quality, I’m posting the at-home scan of the snake for those of you who like to click on the photos and see them larger. The lab scans aren’t large enough, and maybe if you look at this in a larger version, you’ll sense the danger I was in from this eight inch long beast of a reptile.
Happy Critter Day!

cool focal point. Are you using a lense baby kit?
Fantastic DOF, really makes him stand out in the shot. I love his colour too. Dangerous photography. Heh.
like the dof here, nice one
LOL...He's not going to attack, why just look at that big ol' smile he has on his face!
I don't know much about sssssnakes, but I don't think he looks like the poisonous variety. I think poisonous have more triangular shaped heads. Even so, I wouldn't want to find out that I am wrong, so I would have kept my distance as well. Shudder~~~~~
This is a great shot! I love it even if I am not tooo fond of snakes, I appreciate them, but I am not fond of them. Shudder~~~~~
I love this one - it's a lovely shot - the colours - the detail - and that absolutely perfect soft focus around the head.GREAT GREAT SHOT!
this is great ! i love snakes ! i like the focus you made...
Eeeck a pet hate. Glad you decided to put a little more distance between you guys, I wonder why :)
Gats to run :)
Suby
in the garden exploration land :o)
i'm going to neglect your personal safety and say: i wish you went nearer to give this baby a nice facial portrait. :p Nice shot anyway, especially considered the risk involved. Please be careful! :)
Very cool shot although I wouldn't have even gotten that close to get the picture. I won't even go in the reptile house at a zoo. :-)
Very cool capture.
It only gives fear to see it me in the photo.
THe DoF...the Focal point...the colors...the details...what a shot...on top of that the courage to get that close...Kudos Micki.
Philo-Graphious
Very nice DOF...you're a trooper to get that close "for the shot"!
Cheers!
this is great! i love the dof and the colors. he's kind of cute, actually;)
Nice dof, great capture!
wow! i like this one very much!
Have always liked a playful DOF with snakes!
Now this one is cool with its depth, the movement involved, lighting and colors, ....... nice one!
Certainly lets the viewer's eyes play right along within the image!!
Nice DOF. I HATE snakes
cool shot...i like the soft edge...beuatful detail:-)
ah caught ya, I knew a snake had made it into my garder to devour all my Irises
Hum.
Eek. Snakes. I'm afraid of snakes. You're so brave.
great and brave capture
I like the DOF a lot in this image. It creates a scary atmosphere. Very nice shot..

Eeeewwww.
We don't have snakes in Ireland- St Patrick chased 'em all out. We have earthworms...and I wouldn't shot them with less than a 105mm either.
Micki
Great shot. He almost looks like he's smiling at you. I love the way the head is clear but the rest of him (mostly) is blurred. I also like the placement of him in the image. Do you know what type of snake it is?
Chris
He looks quite dangerous!
ohhh, that's a baby snake??? maybe was his meal time!!!! ;D or probable he/she has quite a bad temper!! ;) GREAT CAPTURE!!!
Good catch! Glad to see you're not afraid of getting too close.
almost leaves you the impression that was too late to back away :)
great shot ....
Nice focus. Is it possible that aperture was wider than f/8? Looks too sharp. The snake doesn't look poisonous, or is it?
Brave girl, nice snake shot.
I love snakes! great capture Micki! cheers ;)
Amazing shot! Great dof too. :)
Wonderful bit of reptilian portraiture! The way that the snake weaves in and out of the DoF really accentuates the mysterious nature of these creatures - great job getting the glossy catch light in its eye, even in the low light.
No new image? Explain yourself :)
I didnt get my critter shot in until Friday! Sorry! I like this snake shot!
Great close up! This is National Geographic in your backyard!
Nice DOF! Good shot, Micki.
that dof is gnarly, so narrow, i like it, i love my 85, its similar
ive photographed a snake before, but it was dead:(
